General CADD Frequently Asked Questions
I will be keeping an eye on the General CADD and Generic CADD Forums and where questions keep cropping up on a regular basis I will add them to this FAQ Area.

Absolute Beginners |
|
I have never used Generic CADD or General CADD before I’m looking for tutorials and suggestions for books.
Inside General CADD Pro is the new e-book by Ralph Grabowski for those wishing to learn how to employ General CADD Pro. A dozen beta chapters and appendices are available now as free downloads in PDF format. Additional chapters are posted as Ralph complete them, at a rate of about one a week.
This e-book is based on the popular Learn Generic CADD 6.0 in a Day book, originally published by WordWare Publishing (Plano TX).
Availability
Inside General CADD Pro is expected to be completed by September, 2002.
The chapters available now are in beta format, and distributed as shareware. When the book is complete, it will be available for US$25 in locked PDF format, with Chapter 1 and Appendix A avaialable as free downloads.

Printing / Plotting Questions |
|
Does anyone know of can software that can be used to write PDF files in General CADD ?
There are several good ones, ranging from "free" to Adobe Acrobat for about $200. We finally settled on Acrobat because of its versatility and the ability to do multiple page documents, add bookmarks and links, security and other features. The PDF Distiller that's included behaves in General CADD just like any other "system printer" and can produce PDF's that are pretty much indistinguishable from "real" plot
Try this freeware: 'OttoPDF', available at: http://www.myndkryme.com/products/ottopdf.html Sorry I haven't tried it so I can't really say how well it works.
Goto http://www.ctrlp.com and register. CtrlP are an online print house. Once you have registered and logged in, you can go to their files download area and download 5D PDF Creator for free. It installs as a printer driver and instead of printing to paper. it creates PDF files and is a superb piece of software. Hope this helps. |

Hatch Patterns |

Where Can I find more Hatch Patterns
You will find AutoCAD Hatch Patterns available at the following web sites.
http://www.cadsupport.co.uk/cshatch.htm

Raster to Vector Converters |
|
Can anyone tell me where I can find Raster to Vector Converters ?
Scan2Cad by Softcover International Ltd. In England. Professional vectorisation for around £83 ($149 approx). IMHO It handles larger A0 scans above 400 dpi better than WinTopo.
WinTopo Pro is a low cost Raster to Vector conversion program, but you can also download its baby sister that's Freeware. Worth trying but IMHO the free version is not as good as Scan2CAD.
RasterVect Software were established in 1997. Their Web Page states "RasterVect is a professional tools for converting raster images into vector format."
MapScan combines several components into one package, graphics tolls for editing & cleaning raster & vector maps, OCR engine for extracting text labels, line vectorization. Distributed Free of Charge to UNFPA- Supported programmes, government agencies and academic institutions.
VECTORY will convert raster images of large scale drawings up to A0 @ 600dpi, into DXF or DGN vector format. Vectory also provides a DWF drawing format. A demo can be downloaded from the web site.
You will find Links to these sites on my AutoCAD Links Page
